40. Construction - Healthy House - Upgrade Costs

The cost of healthy house construction is of course higher than standard construction.

  • Time is needed to wrap every wall with airtight wrap and ensure airtightness.
  • The plasterboard needs to be battened out from the wrap for plumbing and electrical services to run within the cavity so they do not penetrate and compromise the airtightness.
  • Outside cladding is installed with a ventilation cavity to allow air in behind it.
  • MVHR system supply and install.

All these items add extra cost and you will need to consider if those costs are justified for your situation. Our building designers in Newcastle at The Rubix Collective estimates that the cost of upgrading to a healthy house costs about $300 more per square metre than a standard home at time of writing.
