75. WELS & The Energy Rating Label - Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme - Cost Savings

Using water efficient products could save Australians more than $2 billion by 2030. That’s an average saving of $175 â€‹per household each year. 65% of these savings are from reduced electricity and gas costs from avoided water heating. 35% of these savings are from reduced water bills. The below table compiled by our contemporary residential designers in the Northern Beaches shows where in the household these savings can be made.

Shower 

For every 1L/m less, 12,000L / $35 p.a. saved

  • 3-star shower that flows at 9L/min will save 70kL and $210 each year
  • 4-star shower that flows at 6L/min will save 105kL and $315 each year
  • Figures based on replacing a 15L/m shower. An equivalent amount (or more) each year on energy could be saved because less water will be heated.

Taps

For every 1L/m less, 2,000L / $5.50 p.a. saved

  • 3-star tap that flows at 9L/min will save 11kL and $33 each year
  • 6-star tap that flows at 4L/min will save 20kL and $60 each year
  • Figures based on replacing a 15L/m shower. An equivalent amount (or more) each year on energy could be saved because less water will be heated.

Toilets

For every L per flush less, 6,000L / $17.50 p.a. saved

  • A toilet with an average flush of 3.5L will save 50kL and $148 each year
  • Figures based on replacing a 12L single flush toilet.

Washing Machine

For every 10L per load, 3,700L / $11 p.a. saved

  • A 6kg, 6-star rated machine that uses 30L per load will save 18kL and $54 each year.
  • Figures based on 1 load a day replacing a 3 star, 80L per load machine.

Dishwasher

For every 10L per wash, 3,700L / $11 p.a. saved

  • A 6-star, 14 place dishwasher that uses 9.5L per will save 3.5kL and $20 each year.
  • Figures based on 1 wash a day replacing a 2 star, 19L per wash machine.
